Saturday

Slept in late until 7:45AM. Woke up achy.
Walked to the gym and used the machines a bit. Came home and showered. Then went to StarTrek fan meeting in Winston-Salem at 1:00PM.
Decided to take advantage of my location and went to Bobby Boy Bakeshop for a couple of wonderful baked goods to take home.
Made Mac and Cheese with Roasted Chicken, Goat Cheese, and Rosemary for dinner and served it with fresh kale tossed with a balsamic dressing that turned out to be a very good pairing with the mac and cheese.

I've got a weird ache in my upper left jaw tonight. I hope it's nothing.

Now that I'm up and in the AC, I feel fine.

I talked to Karen for a while about her health issues and an upcoming family visit.
MonsterMustDie has been in a very negative emotional state since Wednesday. I can't seem to avoid making him angry.
My only plan is to avoid him and work around him as much as I can. I have nowhere to go to escape him.

I am thankful for my health. I hope I am well for the rest of my life. My goal is to live into my 90's like both of my grandmothers and have a $5 part break during my sleep that takes me out painlessly.

There has only been bad news on the health of my friends this week.
One friend had another heart failure that has taken a toll on his brain now and his condition is terminal.
Another friend has a new, second, lung cancer diagnosis.

Tonight was Womens Night Zoom. Sandy showed up and she brought me up-to-date on everything she knew that was going on with the other ladies.
Nicky is still in the hospital.
Kim and Harris are in Florida.
Seth is retiring and Pam is still planning to work as an independent contractor.
I did not have much to say for myself, except for a brief synopsis of my learning experience with lab results, which were good this week. I love everyone at Duke.

It is a long day today with three oncology visits at Duke this afternoon. MonsterMustDie is coming with me. It's all routine appointments - blood labs, doctor visit, and Zometa IV treatment to prevent bone loss. I met with my doctor, who said everything looks good. I'll see her again in six months.
I had a learning moment when the blood labs came back as a slightly high amount of Calcium in the Renal Function Panel. Then they explained that this is corrected by my Albumin levels, which leave it well within the normal range. Also, the Zometa will slightly lower my blood calcium level by moving calcium from the blood into the bones. All good. The only concern for me is that if I ever need dental work, it is best to have it three months after discontinuing the Zometa treatment to avoid complications. Fortunately, last time I was at the dentist office, they told me my teeth are in great condition.
I really should have studied this and reviewed my history before meeting with my Oncologist.

Sunday was spent on a nice visit with Karen. We did some shopping, went to Zoomba at her church, and hung out at their house. Bob was out of town, visiting their daughter to help with some electrical, reclaiming the expensive thermostat she had installed at her old apartment. As it turned out, the apartment did not have any functioning heating or AC and the thermostat was not the problem - it was the building. They replace the older, cheap thermostat and she is taking the one she purchased to her next place, wherever that might be.

I went to Yoga class at the gym this morning. I also went to Spin class in the late afternoon. Made it 30 minutes through the session today. That's at least 10 minutes more than I was able to do last week. Actually, I think I only did 15 minutes last week.

This is not a good week for our friends, medically. Nicky is back in the hospital again and it's bad enough that Audrey is dropping out for a while to process some things. I don't know what is happening now with them.
Kathy has not communicated with me since May 1, when I shared an image she liked at an art opening. She has dropped out while fighting multiple autoimmune disorders.

Karen has a mysterious hard knot on her lower leg, at the Tibia or Fibula, that she needs a doctor to look at. Fortunately, she says there is no pain at all from it - it's just weird. She went to a sports medicine appointment yesterday. Maybe she asked about it there, although I don't think that in their area at all.

Yesterday was very empty so I was desperate to get out of the house so MonsterMustDie's offer to go to Nomad was well-timed. I like seeing whatever art is up when we go in and that's the biggest attraction of that place to me. There are rarely more than a handful of people there at any time and it is quiet unless an event or party is booked inside.

it's been a sorry week so far

Sunday - lost all connectivity on my phone. Could not even make calls and the Navigator and internet were non-functional. Even the carrier service was kaput.

Got my phone back up and running after
Turning Airplane Mode On,
Waiting 15 minutes,
Then turning Airplane back off
Then reset the network and internet settings
Waited 2.5 hours for the network to repopulate my account from their end.

Monday - Failure at the gym. Was muscle cramps and aching in my legs and right elbow. Only made 17 minutes in the Spin class.
Later that night, we witnessed someone in a dark pickup truck dump a dog on the street beside our house and drive off while the dog was barking and trying to follow them.

Woke up with body aches this morning. Did stretches before getting out of bed. We'll see how today goes.
Went to visit the dog that was abandoned last night. She's at a neighbor's house for now, until anyone can find out what to do with her.

It is raining and a lot cooler today. Very nice.

MonsterMustDie is having a lot more memory problems than usual today. We had an appointment for an estimate on new windows for the house that I told him verbally about this morning and when he got home from work. I wrote it on the wall calendar as well and he still forgot about it entirely and would not even speak to the salesman when he arrived at the house this afternoon. Then he asked if he was told about this beforehand.

He's also been reacting emotionally to everything today. He thinks everyone is mad at him for no reason again and I can't do or say anything to make him feel otherwise. He's also being very needy for affirmation and I have been trying to do that for him but I am starting to get really tired of it today. He is like a four-year-old constantly seeking my approval and I have to tell him that he is right about everything and that everything he has ever made or done is wonderful, which is what I am trying to do today. If I am not enthusiastic enough, he gets angry.
I have no place to escape to. I know he can't help himself.

I'll take that as a sign that she is having a very good, busy first visit with her biological sisters in Florida.

Yesterday evening, we had dinner and a visit with MonsterMustDie's cousin, Brian, and his wife, Chantelle. They were on their way to vacation at Virginia Beach. We ended up eating at BlueRock Pizza.
His cousin, Brian, had a serious mortality check with nearly dying in the most random way. He had a very bad reaction to a drug they used during his eye surgery, Fentanyl. He said that he was apparently he is allergic to it. They almost lost him... from a routine surgery most of us get at a certain age.
They also discussed the condition of other cousins who he saw at the recent funeral of MonsterMustDie's uncle. One brother is in fantastic, age-defying shape. The other is swollen, mentally fading, and nearly gone.
We came back to our house. MonsterMustDie showed them around a bit and discussed his garden.
Chantelle is delightful. I talked with her about books we have read and want to read.
It was a very good visit.

New day. No plans, other than going to the gym.
Slept ok last night after going to bed a few minutes before 9PM. I didn't have too many body aches last night but my Restless Legs kept waking me up. That's the price I pay for spending too much time in the car yesterday. That's still a lot better than my absolute inability to travel in a car when my back/muscle injury experience started April 13, 2024, The morning I woke up unable to move enough to even put on my shoes. I think I can handle travel now as long as I am allowed to make frequent stops to stretch and move my body.

I am still concerned about my Lab Results and Notes From Care Team yesterday.
In the first document from yesterday, it says
“No significant change in mucus plugging/nodularity in the anterior right lower lobe within bronchiectatic airways. No concerning nodule identified.”

In the Notes From Care Team yesterday, it says
IMPRESSION:
...
"2. Slight increase in clustered and branching nodular opacities at the right lung base consistent with an inflammatory process or minimal infection. "

It is the words "Slight increase" that worries me.
That, it turns out, is a note from Comparison: 5/13/2025.
I sent a message to my Thoracic care team and the PA who saw me last phoned me back this afternoon.
My PA says it is just mucus. The lower right and middle right lobe of the lung is the most common area for mucus from aspiration, like the sort I have often when saliva goes down the wrong way, to settle.

Good news! The results of my chest CT scan this afternoon were great.
I was still a bit confused because the NP said the spot in my right lung had resolved itself.
However, the report says
"Slight increase in clustered and branching nodular opacities at the right lung base consistent with an inflammatory process or minimal infection."

I asked the PA who saw me yesterday and she assured me that comment was from the original CT scan back in February.

FINDINGS:
Lower Neck: Stable nodular thyroid.
Mediastinum/Heart/Esophagus: Normal size heart and great vessels. No pericardial effusion. No coronary artery calcification is identified. . No adenopathy. Small hiatal hernia.
Upper Abdomen: No significant change in a hypodensity in the right hepatic lobe which presumably represents benign hemangioma when correlating with a contrast CT May 13, 2025. Stable simple cystic hypodensities in the tail the pancreas.
Chest Wall: Prior bilateral lumpectomies. Left axillary surgical clips. No adenopathy.
Bones: No suspicious osseous lesion.
Lungs/Pleura: No pleural effusion or pneumothorax. Postoperative changes of left upper lobe wedge resection, stable bandlike scarring along the suture margin. No significant change in mucus plugging/nodularity in the anterior right lower lobe within bronchiectatic airways. No concerning nodule identified.
IMPRESSION:
Prior left upper lobe wedge resection. No evidence for recurrence or metastatic disease in the chest.

Yesterday was fairly active. I started the day taking the car in to have a brake light replaced and my emmissions inspection was done while I was there.
I saw a weird thing in my next door neighbor's front yard in the morning as I was leaving home at 8:35 AM. It was a brief rain shower that only covered a small area in the middle of her yard - like a giant watering can was in the sky.
I went to Cardio Dance at the gym in the afternoon.
Later that night, I met up with K and B at CharBar7 for live music and snacks. I really need to remember to only order one appetiser or small plate that I can share with someone else. The portions are too generous for me to eat alone.
MonsterMustDie was drinking at home and not good company for anyone, including me.
I started to have a bit of nasal drainage yesterday evening as well, starting right at the time I showed up to the restaurant.

This evening, the plan is to join K and B for dinner at their house.

Zoom tonight with the ladies was very good. Seven of us showed up for the conversation. We caught up on Nick's progress after his heart procedure. Also heard about Audrey's first experience in a float tank. Lisa's class schedule is a lot easier this semester, with just two classes a week, instead of every night. Gilli showed everyone around her new house. Bridget discussed future plans for remodeling their house. Kim and Bridget both talked about camping.

MonsterMustDie went alone to Duke this morning. I think he chooses to go this way because
1. He is still very private about everything in his life (bad partner).
2. He is more comfortable treasure-hunting at multiple antique and thrift shops on the way home.

This means I am alone most of the day.
Yoga class at the gym this morning was cancelled. The instructor badly injured her hand on the way to class. I worked out on the weight machines instead before going home.

MonsterMustDie tells me he had a great check-up today. All of his numbers have remained at the same, very low levels. He says his doctors are quite pleased.

I also found out there is a woodpecker nest high up in a pinetree behind our back yard. The sound of the chicks got my attention and I looked up to see the adults returning to the nest. Meanwhile, there is also a Northern Mockingbird nest in the shrub in front of the kitchen window now.

Power 30 was hard

Rain, at last, this morning.
Today is MonsterMustDie's 71st birthday. He went shopping after work for more plants for the back yard. He also stopped by FreshMarket and bought himself a celebratory small pecan tart.

I went to the Power 30 class at the gym today and had an extraordinarily difficult time making it through the workout. At one point, I felt dizzy and had more trouble than usual catching my breath. I hope it was just a sign of being a bit dehydrated.
It had been such a chilly day, I wore my new black sweats for the workout but I did not feel especially hot.

Yesterday was spent sending preparing for the weekend trip to Atlanta. I washed the car and filled up the tank. I had the oil checked on Tuesday.
I sent out a few more emails and made some phone calls to make plans with friends that we might have time to see in two days.
I had a morning appointment at the bank about moving funds to different types of accounts, which I will probably do but I don't make immediate decisions on things like that if I can help it. They were advising me to put some or most of my money in an higher interest-drawing savings account.
At the risk of making him angry, I begged MonsterMustDie not to drink while we are with friends in Atlanta. I had to ask, at least. If this trip goes well, maybe I can make more trips in the future alone. My physical ability to travel is still questionable.

Today, I woke up to the sound of MonsterMustDie reflexively clearing his throat and the cat meowing a little after 5:00 AM. I laid in bed, wishing to go back asleep, unsuccessfully, for another hour before getting up. Waking up early is not a bad thing because it does give me a head start on getting ready for morning tasks.
This is a 3-appointment day with Duke. The first two will be in Durham, before I go home in time for a TeleMed Zoom meeting follow-up appointment in the afternoon. There will be a lot of running to make it to everything in time.

Update:
I started the day with a physical therapy appointment. I got some new exercises and updated and replaced some in the routine I already had. He also took time to explain what we are aiming for with each exercise and goal.

Unbeknown to me, today's MRI was with contrast so I really wished I had hydrated more before coming in. Actually, the tech, Oshain, was very good with the IV. Mostly painless.

According to the PA who met with me after my abdominal MRI this afternoon, my results look great. My pancreas and surrounding vital organs look normal with no real changes in the pancreatic cyst I have. In fact, the cyst actually imaged a bit smaller than last time. Pancreatic cysts don't go away but they can look different according to what angle they are seen at. She feels 99% sure that what I have is totally benign. She also said my liver and kidneys look good too. They will continue to monitor my abdomen once a year with an MRI but things look great. I am very happy to hear that.

I did notice I was kinda itchy all over tonight. I don't know if that was a mild reaction to the IV injection I got for my MRI today or something I encountered during my evening walk outdoors. I think it was probably a reaction to the injection because the sensation was everywhere.

Audrey is still with Nick at the hospital, where he has been for a week now. He had a second heart procedure scheduled today that was bumped for an emergency surgery.
Sandy was working late. Pam's dog just had teeth extracted. Lisa had a class.
It's been a bad week for everyone between health issues, personal matters at home, work demands, and the constant impending apocalypse or WW3 started by the USA.

It was a very quiet weekend. I spent part of Easter Sunday in the parking lot of the local cinema, with everything around me closed except for one nice restaurant on the holiday. I left the house to escape MonsterMustDie screaming at the computer for hours because he was frustrated with Etsy while, as it turns out, they were doing a live update on the website. When he gets like this, he refuses to step away from the computer and he makes my life at home miserable. So I just sat in a parking lot in the rain and talked on the phone with Karen for a while.

I started today going to a lite yoga class at the gym this morning.
I came in and took a nap. MonsterMustDie got home and started raging at the machine again.
I went back to the gym later to try the Spin class for the first time. I made it through the first 30 minutes. I'll try it again and try to build my strength in my thighs for it. I also need some nicer butt-padded shorts for the hard seats on the stationary bikes.
I think the gym might become my place to escape from home.

Feeling anxious about my job interview this afternoon, even though it sounds like a very good arrangement close to home, but something I could take or leave. Everything makes me anxious these days. I am very glad it is not a retail sales job.
The job interview was good and bad. The hours and responsibilities sound perfect from me, not interfering with my SSA payments and well-within my skill set. However, the air everywhere in the building is heavy with the smell of plastic fumes. I could not feel safe or comfortable working in an environment like that after having surgery for lung cancer. It really seemed too toxic in every corner of the building, including the offices.

The day started with more urgent phone calls about the single-incident leak in the ceiling of the unit below mine this week. I got in touch with my realtor, the management company, and the owner of the unit. I think everything that can be done to make things right has been set up now.
Next, I had a good experience at the dental cleaning appointment I had this afternoon. I really like the new hygienist I had today and I hope I keep seeing her at future appointments.
I went to the low impact class at the gym today at 3:30pm and finished by doing one round of exercises on the thigh machine before I left the gym.

Physical therapy was just a new diagnostic appointment with a new therapist. It was a good appointment and conversation. I go back again at least one time in late April.
The interview went better than I expected and now I need to set up a second interview this week. Looks like they are totally ok with me sharing a shift with another retiree who has been working there a while. She can train me and I can see if I like the job, which is just 10 minutes away here.

I slept well without restless legs last night after taking a MotrinPM. Woke up with a very slight headache.

Karen moved our meeting to Thursday, which is now packed with activities for me. The only thing now on my calendar for today is a Zoom meeting with friends and probably another day of phone calls and emails about my condo in Atlanta. On weeks like this, I wish I could be the only person in the condo so I could be on site and have my place in the city to stay at to be close to friends, possibly working in my industry, and shaping my home in a way that fits me. I don't miss the dysfunctional neighbors but I really miss Atlanta. I don't think the close community in the condo has not existed since the Covid shut down.

MonsterMustDie is out all day searching thrift shops for things to make into his assemblages.
I walked to the Fitness Center and went through my workout on the weight machines. Then I walked home. I should be a lot more relaxed on such a boring day but all that is going on with the condo in Atlanta is filling me with anxiety.

I didn't sleep well at all last night, despite feeling fatigued all day. I woke up with restless legs at 1:00AM and kept tossing and turning the rest of the night until I got up a bit before 6:00AM today.

Today was very stressful. I had multimple emails and phone calls to answer and pass on about the water leak in the condo below mine. We are not sure where it came from and the owner of the unit below me wants to open their walls up, and possibly my walls as well, to see where the water was coming from. The water has stopped now and it was a single event.
The realtor managing my condo is, as usual, hard to contact and he only communicates through text and email. I have no contact information for the tenant in the unit, which seems strange.
On top of all that, the owner of the unit below me said the HOA dues had gone up to $300 a month. I checked every letter and email from the condo association and there are no messages about this. I had saved contact information for the management company of the building and after two emails and a phone call, she emailed me back to say the fees went up last October. There was also a special assessment due for plumbing work on the outside of the building. I sent one massive check by mail to the condo association yesterday, that I took to the post office myself before it closed for the day.

I didn't make it to the gym today. I was to anxious too exercise. I do plan to try the Power 30 class next week.

I made potato pancakes tonight for dinner with the last of the leftover colcannon from Saint Patrick's Day. That was a very hardy meal. All of the extra ingredients in the colcannon, like onions and cabbage, really boosted the texture and flavor in the boxty recipe I used.

MonsterMustDie wanted to watch the news at the end of the night instead of another episode of Firefly. That was even more anxiety-producing for me but he was not in the mood for SciFi and at least it wasn't true-crime shows, which he also seems to watch a lot of these days. After the regular news, all of the live networks play true-crime shows at night and he just sits and wathches whatever is on after the news finishes.

I took a Motrin PM before going to bed.

Tuesday - Saint Patrick's Day

Spent the morning prepping food to cook and starting the corned beef in a crock pot - just a tiny 2 lb brisket.
I made Bakewell Tart, Colcannon, roasted root vegetables, and corned beef. We had eight guests, which is a very good amount of people here IMHO. Everyone really enjoyed the company and conversation. We got to know some neighbors better, which is always a desire I have.

MonsterMustDie drank too much and was an asshole, predictably, mostly to me. I can't stop him from getting drunk if there is any alcohol around and guests did bring beer. It is a pity that he is a hateful drunk.
