Sandy was working late. Pam's dog just had teeth extracted. Lisa had a class.
It's been a bad week for everyone between health issues, personal matters at home, work demands, and the constant impending apocalypse or WW3 started by the USA.

It was a very quiet weekend. I spent part of Easter Sunday in the parking lot of the local cinema, with everything around me closed except for one nice restaurant on the holiday. I left the house to escape MonsterMustDie screaming at the computer for hours because he was frustrated with Etsy while, as it turns out, they were doing a live update on the website. When he gets like this, he refuses to step away from the computer and he makes my life at home miserable. So I just sat in a parking lot in the rain and talked on the phone with Karen for a while.

I started today going to a lite yoga class at the gym this morning.
I came in and took a nap. MonsterMustDie got home and started raging at the machine again.
I went back to the gym later to try the Spin class for the first time. I made it through the first 30 minutes. I'll try it again and try to build my strength in my thighs for it. I also need some nicer butt-padded shorts for the hard seats on the stationary bikes.
I think the gym might become my place to escape from home.

Feeling anxious about my job interview this afternoon, even though it sounds like a very good arrangement close to home, but something I could take or leave. Everything makes me anxious these days. I am very glad it is not a retail sales job.
The job interview was good and bad. The hours and responsibilities sound perfect from me, not interfering with my SSA payments and well-within my skill set. However, the air everywhere in the building is heavy with the smell of plastic fumes. I could not feel safe or comfortable working in an environment like that after having surgery for lung cancer. It really seemed too toxic in every corner of the building, including the offices.

The day started with more urgent phone calls about the single-incident leak in the ceiling of the unit below mine this week. I got in touch with my realtor, the management company, and the owner of the unit. I think everything that can be done to make things right has been set up now.
Next, I had a good experience at the dental cleaning appointment I had this afternoon. I really like the new hygienist I had today and I hope I keep seeing her at future appointments.
I went to the low impact class at the gym today at 3:30pm and finished by doing one round of exercises on the thigh machine before I left the gym.

I slept well without restless legs last night after taking a MotrinPM. Woke up with a very slight headache.

Karen moved our meeting to Thursday, which is now packed with activities for me. The only thing now on my calendar for today is a Zoom meeting with friends and probably another day of phone calls and emails about my condo in Atlanta. On weeks like this, I wish I could be the only person in the condo so I could be on site and have my place in the city to stay at to be close to friends, possibly working in my industry, and shaping my home in a way that fits me. I don't miss the dysfunctional neighbors but I really miss Atlanta. I don't think the close community in the condo has not existed since the Covid shut down.

MonsterMustDie is out all day searching thrift shops for things to make into his assemblages.
I walked to the Fitness Center and went through my workout on the weight machines. Then I walked home. I should be a lot more relaxed on such a boring day but all that is going on with the condo in Atlanta is filling me with anxiety.

I didn't sleep well at all last night, despite feeling fatigued all day. I woke up with restless legs at 1:00AM and kept tossing and turning the rest of the night until I got up a bit before 6:00AM today.

Today was very stressful. I had multimple emails and phone calls to answer and pass on about the water leak in the condo below mine. We are not sure where it came from and the owner of the unit below me wants to open their walls up, and possibly my walls as well, to see where the water was coming from. The water has stopped now and it was a single event.
The realtor managing my condo is, as usual, hard to contact and he only communicates through text and email. I have no contact information for the tenant in the unit, which seems strange.
On top of all that, the owner of the unit below me said the HOA dues had gone up to $300 a month. I checked every letter and email from the condo association and there are no messages about this. I had saved contact information for the management company of the building and after two emails and a phone call, she emailed me back to say the fees went up last October. There was also a special assessment due for plumbing work on the outside of the building. I sent one massive check by mail to the condo association yesterday, that I took to the post office myself before it closed for the day.

I didn't make it to the gym today. I was to anxious too exercise. I do plan to try the Power 30 class next week.

I made potato pancakes tonight for dinner with the last of the leftover colcannon from Saint Patrick's Day. That was a very hardy meal. All of the extra ingredients in the colcannon, like onions and cabbage, really boosted the texture and flavor in the boxty recipe I used.

MonsterMustDie wanted to watch the news at the end of the night instead of another episode of Firefly. That was even more anxiety-producing for me but he was not in the mood for SciFi and at least it wasn't true-crime shows, which he also seems to watch a lot of these days. After the regular news, all of the live networks play true-crime shows at night and he just sits and wathches whatever is on after the news finishes.

I took a Motrin PM before going to bed.

Tuesday - Saint Patrick's Day

Spent the morning prepping food to cook and starting the corned beef in a crock pot - just a tiny 2 lb brisket.
I made Bakewell Tart, Colcannon, roasted root vegetables, and corned beef. We had eight guests, which is a very good amount of people here IMHO. Everyone really enjoyed the company and conversation. We got to know some neighbors better, which is always a desire I have.

MonsterMustDie drank too much and was an asshole, predictably, mostly to me. I can't stop him from getting drunk if there is any alcohol around and guests did bring beer. It is a pity that he is a hateful drunk.

Stormy Monday

The weather forecast is dramatic today. I slept horribly with a headache all night and then got three alerts on my phone about a tornado watch in Dekalb County, Georgia. I hope I can sleep well and painlessly tonight.

I've had a headache since yesterday morning. I think it could be a delayed reaction to the RSV Vaccine I got on Friday, March 13. That seems to happen often after vaccinations now. This one is not as immediate or debilitating as previous post-vaccine headaches but it's still pretty bad. Maybe I got the RSV vaccine too soon after the in-office Pneumococcal Vaccine on March 4 but it was more than a week later. My only immediate reaction to the Pneumococcal vaccine was fatigue for a few days.
I imagine the headache could also be partially brought on by factors like the weather - barometric pressure, etc, when my body is already teetering on the edge after the vaccinations.

The headache did disappear by 1:00pm, after food and coffee and moving around a while. I hope it does not reappear tomorrow.

Felt a headache coming on this afternoon so I took an Advil Dual Action at 1:45pm.

I went to Harris Teeter first and the produce department was dismal - not much there and everything I did find was not fresh.

After I got home, MonsterMustDie and I watched an amazing live performance of Gorillaz on YouTube.

Friday, I had another very good Physical Therapy session at Duke in Durham. The therapist has done a lot to break up scar tissue and loosen muscles made stiff by radiation by strongly massaging that area. That's something I could never do for myself. She also give me more stretches and exercises to stay on. She thinks this was the last session I needed with her before she goes on maternity leave for 3 months. My next set of physical therapy appointments will be to treat my back and hip, which I hope allows me to get past this painful condition I've had since I woke up with it on April 13, 2024.

Friday, I got a couple of important tasks done. I had my car checked out and my oil changed at the Kia dealership and they gave my car a much better review than anyone else did and actually charged me less than I expected.
Later that afternoon, I got my RSV vaccine at the Harris Teeter Pharmacy.

Saturday, I met up with the StarTrek group at Dave & Buster's in Winston-Salem. I made the choice of spending my money on food instead of games. I wish I had chosen games instead because the fish and chips plate I spent $25 was so salty and greasy.

I had a good checkup at Atrium. Very brief but the news is my blood labs look very good.
My doctor set up a follow-up appointment in 6 months. When I asked why, they explained that they see all Medicare patients every six months - the nature of being elderly (past 60).
Also got the Pneumococcal Vaccine in office and a prescription for Adult RSV vaccination at my local pharmacy.
They did not appear to record the vaccination that I got in office on MyChart.

Picked up more pecans from the neighbors yard while I was walking just before sunset.

I know I need to continue on my Rosuvastatin 5mg that Dr. Furr prescribed and I assume that requires blood labs, so should this actually be an annual checkup instead?

Since you are on medicare, they usually will not cover an annual physical. She treats the wellness' as a physical with patients who are on medicare. It will be billed to Medicare as Medicare Wellness Visit. Labs are also in, so you can stop by when you are fasting to get them.

I am very relieved that everything is set up correctly after the fiasco with Novant.

Argh!
I have a "Medicare Wellness" (useless) appointment on Wednesday that I now think should have been set up as an "Annual Physical" appointment. So now I have to wait until Monday to speak to someone at Atrium to fix or cancel the appointment. Meanwhile, I think I need to go in Monday or Tuesday for Blood Labs to stay on my Rosuvastatin regardless. It would be a wasted opportunity not to have everything necessary for a Physical done in one blood draw.

We had a very nice homemade dinner of coq au vin at Karen and Bob's house. I always enjoy visits with them at their home or ours, hanging out talking about news, exchanging useful knowledge, and life in general. We need to get out and around other people more.

I had two very good appointments at Duke yesterday.
The first, in physical therapy for my shoulder, gave me some good new exercises and a great kneading out of the stiffness on my left side that I could never do on my own. She worked very deeply, mostly on the muscle tissue, which was stiff as a common effect of radiation therapy. It felt a lot better afterwards and feels even better today
The next was my after-mammogram visit. I got a very good all-clear diagnosis from the mammogram and she spent plenty of time explaining that I had a Diagnostic Mammogram for my dense breast tissue that was very accurate. She took the time to educate me a bit more while I was there and I appreciate that a lot.

I weighed in at 117 lbs Thursday afternoon, so I think I can stop worrying about whether I am taking in enough calories now.

Friday - Fitness Center

I woke up today after MonsterMustDie had already gone to work. I usually wake up just before he leaves but he got out a little bit earlier this morning.

I got a phone call from Atrium at 11:20AM today. The girl on the phone said my doctor had ordered blood labs and was sending a refill of my rosuvastatin. As she was hanging up, I asked if there was a limit to how soon to the appointment I needed to show up for the blood labs and she said any day I had fasted. This was the first time anyone said I needed to fast before blood labs there. The blood labs my doctor at Atrium ordered are "for your wellness appointment" without saying what labs would be done, and the fast only needs to be six hours before blood is taken, having only coffee and water. I had to pull that info out of her.

Today was my fitness center orientation appointment.



They did not use any of this equipment but it looks cool. They only explained and gave me access to three training machines before the person in charge of my orientation ran out of time. Pretty disappointing. I tried to figure out the treadmills on my own but I failed at that. I am looking forward to learning how to use the treadmills because that is one of the main things I think will be good to do on bad-weather days (raining or too cold).

Today was spent mostly dealing with idiot AI calls and trying to communicate with my doctor's office at Atrium.
Among other things, the health insurance AI had me pick a time for them call me back. I thought this would be a human calling to talk to me about my prescriptions. Instead, when it was time for the call, it was the AI again. It started by giving me the choice of keying in my birthdate for ID or going back to the main menu by saying or tapping 1. My birthday is in October. No one with a birthday in October, November, or December or with a date that has a one in it can answer that without going immediately back to the main menu. I found a way to describe my birthdate as simply as possible without using a one. Had to repeat it a few times. Then the AI called and connected me to my pharmacy, who did not know what I was calling about.

I finally got around to walking up and joining Atrium Fitness this afternoon. My orientation appointment is Friday.

Yesterday was my first post-lung surgery CT scan. The saw just enough to say there is nothing to worry about but also enough to schedule my next CT scan for three months instead of six so they could have a better baseline for what is going on in my chest. I will be counting the days until the next CT happens in May. Hopefully, these little things will resolve themselves between now and then.

No aggressive osseous lesions are identified.
IMPRESSION:
1. Status post partial left upper lobe resection. Mild soft tissue thickening around the staple line, presumably postoperative in etiology.
2. Slight increase in clustered and branching nodular opacities at the right lung base consistent with an inflammatory process or minimal infection.
3. Otherwise stable CT examination of the chest.

Tuesday - hiking on melting snow

Karen and Bob invited me to join them hiking at Hanging Rock park today, meeting at their house at 11:00 AM.
There was still a lot of snow on the ground at the park. At the opening to the park, we were invited to join a woman named Jenna and her mother at the sheltered fireplace, who were roasting mashmallows while celebrating her mother's birthday. They had brought a bundle of firewood and a bag of large mashmallows and were just enjoying the day out. As it turned out, Jenna is a digital artist and she talked with Karen about providing some illustration work for the project Karen is currently working on.

Also enjoyed talking with Audrey, Bridget, and Kim during Women's Night Zoom this evening.

This is my last day of antibiotics so I really hope the UTI is cleared up now. I have my doubts but I feel ok this morning.
I will probably drink daily Yarrow herbal tea for a while.

If it had not been for timing of all the snow and ice we're still getting, I would have planned a Superb Owl party for this coming weekend. I was looking forward to creating another social event for friends and neighbors here but I don't think there is time now to get people to plan on being here.
I am a social creature and I love to put people together in a room or project with me. I miss that life. It's always a battle to get MonsterMustDie to allow me to have people in our home but the fights always seem worth it. I pay for it all. I put it together. I clean up afterwards. He is always stressed by having more than two people extra in our space at a time and, although he actually always seems to be much better at it than me, he hates to interact with people. I am socially awkward but I love people. He can make small talk with anyone if he must and he hates it. I make word piles.
Even crowds at supermarkets freak him out. I have seen him leave the farmers market in a panic. He does his best to make himself invisible. This makes his early dimentia even worse. He spends all his time at home isolated at his desk, skimming either facebook or listing things for sale online. I wish I had a reliable third place or group to put together my follies with.

Isolation has always been torture to me.

Snowed in

We shoveled out enough of the driveway for our cars to (hopefully) get through yesterday but the streets around us are still completely frozen over. We still have power and there is food in the fridge and pantry so everything is still ok now. The showerhead in the main bathroom was acting a bit suspicious yesterday but no broken pipes have been detected.

I woke up this morning with a UTI. All doctors offices and clinics are closed today. I went through old leftovers in the medicine cabinet to find something to start on today and found one that was a gift from a friend that does not conflict with my other meds. Those outdated-but-still-good pills are a lifesaver. This kind of pain is not one I can wait on.

Snow

It started snowing yesterday and snowed all day and finally stopped snowing at 10:40PM.
The overnight low tonight is supposed to be 13 degrees. Tomorrow night is supposed to be 10 degrees.
Fortunately we never lost power and the snow is light fluffy powder - really deep fluffy snow.



I haven't exercised all day because I never had a moment to myself. I never got out and walked because the snow kept coming down heavily all day. I hope I can do my floor exercies in the morning before MonsterMustDie wakes up.
At least I think I can get a good walk in tomorrow, now that the snow has stopped coming down. I am looking forward to walking outdoors.

Ellie's Veterinary Visit

Today is Ellie Cat's veterinary visit at 2:00 pm. I dosed her as instructed with medication for anxiety last night. I was paranoid about over-medicating her. I sent a message to a veterinarian friend and was assured it was a common dose for anxious cats.
MonsterMustDie went with me to the vet and helped pay for her care today. Next step is an UltraSound at a specialty vet in Greensboro to check on a spot in her abdomen or putting her on steroids for whatever inflamation is possibly happening in her gut.

Sunday snow day

I notice last night that, oddly enough, I sometimes feel short of breath when I try to yawn. I have no problem otherwise breathing through my nose or mouth but yawning closes my ability to breathe in. 
Of course, now my body wants to yawn tonight but I can't. This is very uncomfortable. It happened again tonight. 

Otherwise, it turned out to be a nice, crunchy snow day. We kept waiting all day for the awful freezing rain that was forecast but it never came. Just some snow followed by sleet, followed by more snow. The accumulation was not enough to completely cover the grass. The trees and power lines are not iced over.

I am still watching the weather forecast today. I decided to reschedule my appointments that were in Durham on Monday. My CT and follow-up visit are rescheduled three weeks further out now.

MonsterMustDie is finding it very difficult to accept the weather forecast this week and my need to make plans to ensure we are prepared for undrivable roads, or worse, power failure at our house. We have no alternative way to stay warm or to power anything here if the electricity goes out for any reason. I probably won't know if I can get him and the cat out of our house on Saturday until the last minute. He does not think it will be that bad and does not want to leave the house when it snows. He is angry and told me not to push him on it. We have friends in Greensboro with a better place (fireplaces, outdoor grill, etc) offering to let us stay with them if we lose power but he feels like I'm telling him what to do.
So, for now, talking about the weather is off-limits until the weekend.

worrisome weather coming

Last night, Karen phoned and asked me if I had seen th weather forecast. The forecast had changed in the last 24 hours to something much more severe fro the weekend. Rather than dry with plunging temperatures after Sunday, the forecast is now for temperatures to start dropping on Saturday with an 84% possibility of snow. Then it becomes even colder on Sunday with the forecast of a Winter Storm - snow and ice in a Wintry Mix. Temperatures stay at just kissing the freezing point or well below it for the rest of the week.

I have three grouped appointments at Duke in Durham on Monday for my post-lung surgery CT images and return doctor visit. I really do not want to have to reschedule these appointments because I worry that I will have to wait too long for the new date to get all three together but it certainly looks like I need to reschedule them now. I will wait until Wednesday or Thursday and hope that, by some miracle, the forecast improves.

I also shared this in a couple of group texts - one with friends and one with family. My sister-in-law replied that my brother has been in the hospital since Saturday with a mystery neuropathy and an elevated white blood cell count. No one had told me this before. I know he had a lot of trouble controlling his blood pressure last year and that is the only health issue I am aware of him having recently... until now. She said they had to cancel their trip to Thailand that they just made plans for after cancelling a trip to Japan when she had heart bypass surgery.

Here's an odd thing. We have a tote bag that I keep used grocery bags in to repurpose for wet trash, cat litter, etc. I reached into that today to pull out a new bag for coffee grounds, etc. before the household trash pickup today and the bottom of the bag was full of thin white flakes of plastic, like onion skin, that clung to everything including my hands and house robe. Apparently, some "biodegradable" plastic had disintegrated in the bag and coated everything. I threw the entire bag away, swept and vacuumed out as much as I could, and put my robe in the washing machine.

MonsterMustDie believes that I should not reschedule my medical appointments on Monday in Durham, NC. He thinks that as long as we park on the street that we should be able to make it out of the neighborhood on Monday and from there it should be smooth sailing to Duke. I hope so.

I am anxious. Today is Kathy's surgery at Duke to remove a brain tumor. We are waiting to hear how things are going from John.
I had poor sleep last night because of muscle spasms/restless leg in my lower back. Woke up achey today.
I am bored. There is nothing necessary on my agenda today.
There are, however two things I've been putting off: joining Atrium Fitness Center and purchasing some art classes at the only place nearby that offers that.
I am also lonely, which the boredom is usually tied to. Both of these things would help with that but I've been spending so much money on various healthcare both for myself and the cat that I don't want to spend more money this month on something not absolutely necessary... unless I could figure out an activity to make money that would not destroy my life. Retail work truly destroyed any possibilty of having a social life or interest here for years with hardly any value at the end of it - 12 to 16 hours of work a week at minimum wage with an unpredictable schedule that eliminated my ability to do anything else.

We heard back from John late in the afternoon.

Kathy was in surgery for about three hours (about what we were told). The surgery was successful. She’s in the ICU and we hope to go back to our VRBO tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted.

The plan for today is house cleaning and putting up holiday decorations and baking the cheese souffle I ran out of time for yesterday.
The decorations are still sitting in the living room but I did make the cheese souffle. I could not find my large souffle dish but I had 5 smaller souffle dishes to spread it into. It was a good endeavor for something I haven't made in years. I lost my original "Never-Fail" recipe with the companion fresh cranberry-pear sauce and had only been making it on special occassions since being diagnosed with high cholesterol in my 30s. I used Alton Brorwn's cheese souffle recipe and kinda improvised on the cranberries, which are out of season now, using dried cranberries with much less sugar added.

New Year's Day 2026

We hosted a New Years Brunch here at Casa WereMonster.
I made garlic kale and black eyed peas. Karen and Bob brought ham. Alexa and Don brought their wonderful mushroom quiche and chocolate cake. Marcia and Michael brought cornbread. It was a good, hardy meal shared with fine people. Conversation was great and it was the first time in quite a while that we got to see everyone. MonsterMustDie splurged and bought a bottle of champagne to share. Those who could still imbibe had champagne and those who could not had some of the delicious triple ginger brew that Trader Joes sells seasonally.
I think I'll sleep well tonight.
